Water Lily

Aug 27th, 2009 Posted in backyard wildlife | one comment »

We thought we missed the waterlily this year.  It sent up a bud just as we were leaving town over the 4th of July.  But I looked out this weekend and here was this lovely little blossom.  A second one!  We have a tiny little pond and grow waterlilies every year.  I love them.

Sunday I had all to myself

Andy had a play date with his boys, the teenager went home and so Sunday I had a day to myself.  I read a book for about 5 hours, drank a pot of tea and then decided to sew.  I found this adorable fabric at the store recently.  To my dismay, it was jersey knit.  I don’t sew with knits, I just never have. I was a little afraid of them.  But the fabric is so funny.  So I bought a simple t-shirt pattern and decided “what the heck, the worst I can do is make a horrible t-shirt”.

I love this shirt.  It went together beautifully.  Hooray for knits.  It’s a New Look Pattern 6901 (by Simplicity).  It took just a yard of fabric.  I love the soft drapey collar.  I think the next one I might cut just about an inch longer, because I felt like I wanted just a tiny bit of extra length.  I also made a size smaller than my measurements would tell me to.  I know that in Simplicity patterns if I do that, it always fits perfectly.

Sewing projects

Two action packed weeks with my sister went by like a whirlwind.  We did a lot of work (she interned at the Textile Center) and a lot of sewing.  Here we are at the opening reception for the latest gallery show with my friend Jen.

Rachel and I both made our dresses.  Hers is this pattern, mine is Butterick 4443.  Rachel’s went together nicely, although we changed the gathering under the bust to pleats instead.  Gathering looked really odd.  Mine worked nicely, but the sleeves were weird.  Required a little altering – I added a pleat and a button – so I didn’t look like I had wings.  The fabric for Rachel’s is great – here’s a close up.  It’s called Teasel & Lace by Jane Sassaman.

Flying by

The summer is really flying by and I haven’t been posting anything!  We were on vacation in South Dakota over the 4th, the next weekend we had family visiting, then a tiny break and Andy went on a backpacking trip while I got insanely busy at work with summer camp and teaching a class and then just when we were ready to have a nice quiet summer, my sister Rachel arrived for a 2 week visit.  (We are mid visit now.)  There is a sun dress being sewn and many other little projects in the dreaming stages. Hope you are all enjoying your summer!
