Sparkle
June 11th, 2012 at 5:14 pm

My boss at work is retiring and we threw a big party for her Friday night.  The theme was “sparkle” and we had some awesome sparkle happening in the building.  I was intending to find a little vintage cocktail dress all bedazzled with sequins, but I struck out finding anything in my size or anything that I was willing to alter.  Sewing sequins is a pain.  So I found this fabric, which looks like all over sequins, but is really a nice mid-weight cotton woven with metallic threads (super easy to sew).

And I got this pattern: Butterick 5547 (which is cuter than it looks on the envelope.)  22(!) darts later and about 4 hours from start to finish,  I had this dress.  If I had more time I would have lined it as the metallic threads are a little scratchy.  But I think given the number of occasions I have to wear a shimmery gold dress, I can stand it.  I also cut out a bow tie for Andy in matching fabric.  His didn’t get finished in time for the party, but it will look great with his tux for some event.

That’s why they make slips…. You gotta have one in the stash somewhere…. And woven sequins is MUCH better than real ones :)

22 darts and you got them all in the right places? Holy Smokes, I’d have still been doing and redoing and redoing.

Marking them on sparkly lamé fabric was a pain in the rear. It took about 1 1/2 hours just for darts.

Ooh, the fit is excellent – I guess all those darts are there for a reason. Is the fit as in the pattern, or did you have to modify it?

I am totally lucky that Butterick and Simplicity are basically made to almost exactly my measurements. I almost always make a size down than what the pattern envelope would instruct me to because I don’t like as much ease as they build in to the pattern. On a pencil skirt like this, I grade up a size at the hips because I don’t like it tight around my bum. But I didn’t move or adjust the darts at all.
