The best handmade gift I have ever gotten: I love a lot of pretty awesome handmade gifts so I will share two favorites: My engagement ring. My husband folded an origami butterfly ring out of silvery paper and gave me that when he proposed. I also have a carved and painted tiny wooden giraffe that my dad made for my mom when they were dating/newlyweds. Last year for Christmas, my mom decided that the little giraffe needed to come stay with me.
The handmade gift I am proudest of: Usually that is the last thing I finished. So right now I am proudest of a beautiful lace cowl I made for my friend Lynn’s birthday. She is a pretty stellar knitter, so I worked really hard to make sure it would be something she would love.

My roommate from college made me a huge quilt when I got married and it has been on my couch ever since – I love it!
My best friend’s younger sister made me a gorgeous necklace and a pair of earrings when I was in the hospital. It was really touching.
For Christmas last year, I made my sister a stuffed Eve toy (from Wall-E.) This year, I’m making my brother a stuffed Totoro. (Full disclosure: he’s 18. :P )
The best handmade present I ever got was also my engagement ring. And my wedding ring, too! Though, my husband made our wedding rings the morning of the wedding out of *nickel*. Um…? So later he made me a silver one. No more green-finger tackiness. He made me a series of engagement rings, and I have a favorite, but I like them all.
The best handmade gift I ever made was a pool bag for my sister. She told me all the things she wanted and I drafted it up and created it. It was no easy task – laminate, piping, zippered pockets, elasticized pockets, mesh pockets, towel holder on the side. It was a beast, but she loved it. And it only took me 18 months to finish!
The best gift I’ve ever received was for absolutely no reason. When we first started dating, my partner gave me a 2’x2′ stained-glass window that she’d made herself. She painted the frame blue, and created a beautiful design in orange, yellow, and blue glass, and put a small square mirror in the middle. She came to my house every day for two weeks with cuts on her arms and hands, and I had no idea what she was doing until she brought the window over. It’s one of my most treasured possessions.
I would have to say I am the most proud of the recent scrapbook that I made for my brother. I’ll try to keep this short, but when we were young, we had a terrible house fire sweep through and burn everything up. Luckily nobody was home. The only thing salvageable was a wooden box full of photos. These photos were just random shots of my brother and up until our current ages at the time (7 and 4 or so). The photos always kept their smoke damage smell but they survived nonetheless. Fast forward to my brother at age 18. Mom passed away, he joined the Army and put all his “stuff” into a storage locker, including this wooden box of photos. During his 2nd tour of duty in Iraq, he called me sobbing as he had just received a letter from the Storage facility explaining that there had been a mixup in paperwork during the sale of the business to the new owners and that they accidentally auctioned off his storage unit by mistake. Everything was GONE. His memories, his items my mother had left behind to him, and most importantly to him, the wooden box of photos. Recently when my grandmother passed, I found a mother-load of photos amongst drawers, saved in books and stuffed in envelopes mailed by our mother to our grandparents of my brother and I from ages birth to about 13 years old. I gathered those photos, the letters and even some school artwork and put them into a 12×12 scrapbook in chronological order (as best I could) and presented this to my brother last summer for his 30th birthday! The look on his face as he realized what it was will never be replaced by anything I ever make again. Happy Holidays and thank you for the chance to win an awesome giveaway!
I made a stuff owl for my little guy for Christmas. It was a challenge for me to make, but he will love it!

Oh – I would love to win that book! Thank you for sharing! My mother made so many things by hand and always gave wonderful presents! One special was a winter coat made with felted blanket.
