Lecture: A Spoonful of Spoonflower Designing fabric is more than just putting pencil to paper or generating pixels in Photoshop; it’s about connecting and sharing stories and ideas. Get a tour of what it’s like to design fabrics and print them using Spoonflower, a web-based service for printing your own fabric designs. Get the scoop on the technical details of uploading and proofing your files, see samples of different fabrics and walk through the process from start to finish. We’ll also talk cost-saving tips for getting the most out of your yard of fabric, ways to proof designs and more.

Learn the basics of kumihimo, an 8 or 16 stranded patterned braid, make your own marudai braiding loom and explore color variations and textures with different yarn weights and colors. A Spoonful of Spoonflower

Get a tour of what it’s like to design fabrics and print them using Spoonflower, a web-based service for printing your own fabric designs. During class, I'll walk through creating a simple two-color design from creating a sketch to uploading and ordering. Get the scoop on the technical details of uploading and proofing your files, managing colors, and see samples of different fabrics. Have a specific project in mind and want a little help? We'll have time at the end for Q&A and brainstorming. I nearly always teach this class as a custom private class for guilds and conferences and I thought it would be great to do a session for anyone to attend!

Stitch your own loon themed tiny wall art from custom printed fabric and learn three embroidery stitches: coral stitch, figure eight knot and back stitch. Designing Kumihimo Braids

Learn the basics of kumihimo, a multi-stranded braid which originated in Japan. In this class you will learn both an 8 and 16 stranded braid pattern and how to make your own marudai braiding loom. We will talk about how to design your own braid variations with different colors and yarn weights or textures. Have another family member who would like to join you for class? Just add on an additional materials kit when you register. About the project. You will be able to complete 2-3 braid samples in class Kit will include a variety of colored and textured yarns and the materials to make a reusable braiding loom. Tech details. Class fee includes a 2 hour live online Zoom class and a materials kit mailed to you before the class session. You will need to provide scissors and a pen/pencil for this project; all other materials you need are included in the kit. Please register early so the materials have time to arrive before class. A Zoom link will be emailed to you a few days before class.

DCL Online: Paper Collage Native Plant Notecards

Zoom/Online Event

Learn how to create MN native plant illustrations using collage techniques and cut painted deli paper. See a demo of how to make your own painted papers. Then use some artist-made papers provided in your kit to create your own design using plant photos for reference. Your finished pieces can be used as note cards or tiny art pieces. Students will need to provide scissors and some scrap paper for this class. All other materials will be provided for the project including hand-painted decorative papers, gluestick and card blanks. Materials kits will be mailed to you or are available to pick up before class. You will need the tools in the kit, so you must have a materials kit to participate in class. This class is held online via Zoom and hosted by Dakota County Libraries. See link in sidebar to register.
