Cancelled – Digital Watercolor Velvet Clutch Bag

2020-06-08T14:55:47-05:00, |Comments Off on Cancelled – Digital Watercolor Velvet Clutch Bag

Create a one-of-a-kind velvet clutch bag using fabric that you have digitally designed and printed. First we’ll use watercolor brushstrokes and a digital kaleidoscope tool to create a pattern that looks like handpainted tiles. Once you’ve designed your pattern then you will learn how to create a cut-and-sew panel to make your bag, printing just the pattern pieces you’ll need at exactly the right size. Finally, learn how to upload and print that digital file at Spoonflower.com. Your finished fabric will be mailed to you after class and you can cut and sew to complete your bag. Materials fee $30, includes digitally printed velvet fabric, clutch purse hardware and notions for finishing your bag.

This class is a new option I am offering as a “hybrid class” with both an in-person and online component. We’ll do the digital work in-person at a class session where I can work with you one-on-one and you can interact with other students. Your fabric will be printed and mailed to you about 2 weeks after that class. The second part of class to sew and finish your bags will be an online class session that you can access anytime and on your own schedule. Most importantly, you can do it in your own sewing space without having to haul any tools and equipment anywhere. The password to access the online class session will be mailed to you with your fabric; you just need a web browser and internet access to participate in the online class. The online class will have video and written instructions step-by-step to help you finish your bag and the option to post comments and questions.

Supplies to bring

Please bring a laptop with a current web browser for this class. (Mac, PC, Chromebook, Surface are all fine). I recommend you also bring your power cord in case your battery runs low and strongly encourage you to bring a mouse and not just use the trackpad. If you don’t have a laptop, I have laptops you can borrow if you reserve one before class starts (limited number available). To RSVP a laptop, please fill out this form.

Skill level

You don’t need any experience with Spoonflower or digital design. Beginner sewing skills and a basic sewing machine are all you need to finish the project. You will need to supply thread, basic sewing tools, and a scrap of lightweight fabric (12”x18”) for lining your bag.

This class is held at HeartFelt Silks Studio.

The Museum of Russian Art is pleased to invite you to a hands-on workshop with Becka Rahn in conjunction with the exhibition Village Wardrobes: Traditional Dress from Western and Central Ukraine

Be inspired by the shapes and colors of the costumes in Village Wardrobes: Traditional Dress from Western and Central Ukraine and create your own digitally printed fabric design.  Artist Becka Rahn will help you to create your own pattern inspired by the exhibition, then show you how to manipulate it using simple software to help you make repeating shapes and textures that can be printed onto fabric or paper. You don’t have to know anything about sewing or computers to be able to create your own surface designs; beginners are welcome!  Each participant will get a swatch of their fabric design to keep and have the opportunity to contribute to a collaborative project that will be on display at the Museum.

This workshop will be available on both October 1 and October 2 at The Museum of Russian Art  |  6:30-8:30 pm

CLASS REGISTRATION:  TMORA Members  $20  |  General Admission  $25

Each workshop is limited to 12 participants.  Advance registration is encouraged.  The Museum of Russian Art features free parking directly across the street (Diamond Lake Road) in the Mayflower Church parking lot.

RahnRecipeCard

This is a recipe written in my Grandmother’s handwriting, which I turned into a linen tea towel.  Cool huh?  This was inspired by a post a couple of years ago on Spoonflower’s blog and I have turned the idea into a class, which is coming up in March.  We will scan a recipe card and learn how to scale it up so it fills a fat quarter of fabric, perfect for a tea towel.  Don’t have a recipe?  You could also use a handwritten note, a signature, a quote, or a poem as long as it is something about the size and shape of an index card.

My recipe cards weren’t quite the right size ratio to fill the whole fat quarter – there was a little white space around the edges – so I made this simple gingham pattern to fill in the gaps and add a pretty border.  You will learn how to do that too!  This class is broken up into 3 class sessions.  There is a gap before the last session so we have time to order our fabric and then meet back one more time so we can show and tell (or troubleshoot) and then I will demonstrate how to hem them (with pretty mitered corners) and show you some more great designs based on this same scanning and scaling technique.

You can register at Textile Center.  Dates are Wednesdays March 25, April 1 and April 29 from 6-8 pm.
