Beginning Cross Stitch: Make an Ornament

2018-10-07T17:47:32-05:00|Comments Off on Beginning Cross Stitch: Make an Ornament

Learn the basics of cross stitch. Choose a tiny motif: birds and bugs, 8-bit characters, dinosaurs, robots, dogs and more. Get tips for choosing the right needles and fabric, wrangling your threads. Finish off your sample into an ornament you can use to decorate for the holidays.

Get your supplies at the shop when you come for class. You’ll want to choose thread colors after you pick the design you want to stitch.

Supplies you will need to purchase include 3-4 colors of embroidery floss, tapestry/cross stitch needles and 11 count aida cloth

You might want a pen and paper to take notes. You are welcome to take photos/video with your camera/phone as I demonstrate stitches.

2018-09-07T09:31:03-05:00|Comments Off on Needle Tatted Snowflakes

Needle tatting is a contemporary twist on a classic lace making technique.  Learn the basic stitches, knots and picots to make a simple snowflake design.  We will use larger yarns in class so you can easily see your stitches and will talk about working at different scale, adding beads and more. (Includes a tatting needle that you will take with you.)

Materials fee $10, payable to the instructor (bring cash or credit card)

Supplies: You don’t need to bring anything with you; all supplies will be included in the materials fee, including a tatting needle that you will get to take home. You might want a pen and paper to take notes. You are welcome to take photos/video with your camera/phone as I demonstrate stitches.

Beginner Embroidery (2 Sessions)

2018-09-07T09:23:08-05:00|Comments Off on Beginner Embroidery (2 Sessions)

2 Sessions: September 25 and October 2

Learn all you need to know about beginning hand embroidery. We will cover the basics of tools, threads, needles, and to hoop or not hoop. Each session we will focus on a group of related stitches, like variations on a theme, with time to practice between sessions and come back with questions. No embroidery experience needed.

Supply list for Beginning Embroidery

Get all of your supplies at the shop; just come a few minutes before class starts so you are ready to go at class time.

  • 1/4 – 1/2 yd of plain colored woven cotton fabric. I recommend RJR solids or Kona cotton. Choose any color or basic muslin.
  • 3-5 colors of six-stranded embroidery floss (thread). Choose any colors.
  • Embroidery needles. I recommend John James, assorted sizes 5/10.
  • One 5-7” embroidery hoop. Wooden or plastic is fine.

You might want a pen and paper to take notes. You are welcome to take photos/video with your camera/phone as I demonstrate stitches.

A note about colors. If you don’t know what colors to choose, here are some suggestions.

  • Contrast is great. Choose white/charcoal/black as a fabric color and three bright colors like red, turquoise and green for your threads.
  • Think of a theme like “ice cream”. That doesn’t mean you are going to make a picture of ice cream, but it gives you a hint about colors.
    • Ice Cream: Vanilla background fabric, brown, pink and pale green threads.
    • Ocean: Pale blue background fabric, tan, turquoise, yellow threads.
    • Paris: Pale grey fabric, blue, red and pink threads.
