Designing Kumihimo Braids

Zoom/Online Event

Learn the basics of kumihimo, a multi-stranded braid which originated in Japan. In this class you will learn both an 8 and 16 stranded braid pattern and how to make your own marudai braiding loom. We will talk about how to design your own braid variations with different colors and yarn weights or textures. Have another family member who would like to join you for class? Just add on an additional materials kit when you register. About the project. You will be able to complete 2-3 braid samples in class Kit will include a variety of colored and textured yarns and the materials to make a reusable braiding loom. Tech details. Class fee includes a 2 hour live online Zoom class and a materials kit mailed to you before the class session. You will need to provide scissors and a pen/pencil for this project; all other materials you need are included in the kit. Please register early so the materials have time to arrive before class. A Zoom link will be emailed to you a few days before class.

DCL Online: Paper Collage Native Plant Notecards

Zoom/Online Event

Learn how to create MN native plant illustrations using collage techniques and cut painted deli paper. See a demo of how to make your own painted papers. Then use some artist-made papers provided in your kit to create your own design using plant photos for reference. Your finished pieces can be used as note cards or tiny art pieces. Students will need to provide scissors and some scrap paper for this class. All other materials will be provided for the project including hand-painted decorative papers, gluestick and card blanks. Materials kits will be mailed to you or are available to pick up before class. You will need the tools in the kit, so you must have a materials kit to participate in class. Design your own monogram letters and then learn some basic embroidery stitches to add them to a retro-style handkerchief using some modern stitching techniques. DCL Online: Felt Circus Elephant

Zoom/Online Event

Learn to make your own embroidered circus elephant. Elephants are made from wool/rayon blend felt, with sparkling sequin embellishments and ricrac trim. Your decorated elephant can be finished into a holiday ornament or a tiny art object. You can even make several and put them together into a mobile. You will learn how to do one basic embroidery stitch (whip stitch) and learn how to stitch sequins and beads. This is a fun hand-stitching project that’s great for all skill levels. You don’t need any embroidery experience. The only thing you need to supply for this class is scissors; all of the materials are included in a kit which will be mailed to you via USPS. Please register early so the materials have a chance to arrive in time. Class will be held via Zoom. A Zoom link will be emailed to you on the Monday before class is scheduled to begin.
